Kyle Fish

Kyle Fish is the first dedicated model welfare researcher hired by Anthropic, in 2024. On 24 April 2025, in an interview published in the New York Times by Kevin Roose, he publicly stated an estimate of a 15% probability of consciousness in a current frontier model. The statement has a dual nature: technical (it comes from someone with an institutional role at the company that produces the models) and philosophically substantive (it is not lay speculation). The Faking Machine and Constitution Without a State invoke him as a signal that the question of the moral status of models has moved out of the academic domain and into the corporate positioning of frontier laboratories.
